Service Project:

Pontiac Oakland Museum

https://www.pontiacoaklandmuseum.org/

mission statement: "Our mission is to preserve, exhibit, and maintain Pontiac and Oakland automobiles and related artifacts, to include preserving their heritage, influence, significance, and place in our society, culture and history."

The Pontiac Oakland museum is ran by a husband and a wife, Tim and Penny dye. Tim Dye is a car and artifact collector of just Pontiac's and Oakland automobiles. Tim and Penny lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma and decided they wanted to start a museum in a town that was along the Route 66 historical road. They did some research and found the city of Pontiac. Tim and Penny decided to move to Pontiac and the museum opened August 1st, 2010. The museum is one of the most popular stops along the journey of Route 66 and is continuing to grow.

I volunteered at the museum on Tuesday, May 5th from 10am-4pm.

The owners of the museum were there and also two other volunteers.

I had to great the visitors when they came in and also help them if they had any questions about the museum or anything else. One thing that was challenging was many visitors are from out of country and they did not speak fluent English so communicating with them was very difficult. I had to speak slow and use a lot of hand gestures to get them to understand.

I met a couple from Austria. Meeting them was my favorite part of the day. Learning someone else's culture and find differences was the most interesting. Communicating with them at first was hard but once I figured out how to communicate we talked for over an hour.

The most important lesson I learned from this experience is that every person is different in their own way. Every nationality is different and it just makes that person even more interesting and fun to meet.

Connecting Sources

Annotated Bibliography

Source #1:
This source is very important because it has many facts about children in poverty and their education.  The journal goes into detail more about children in poverty and their education and I plan on using many of the statistics that this source has. One thing I really like about this journal is that it is not just the USA but it is global. I think being talking about children all around the world is very important because this issue not only affects the US but many other countries as well. I tend on going into detail about that specific point as well. The journal was published recently so this source is up to date on statistics about the amount of children in poverty.

Source #2:
Bratter, Jennifer. "Multiracial Children and Poverty:Evidence from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of Kindergartners." National Council on Family Relations. 62. 1:175-189. Web. Febuary. 2013
This source is very important to my paper because it focuses on all different races and types of children and their parents. Some people tend to think there is one specific type of child that has a higher chance of going into poverty, such as African Americans, Whites, low class, etc., but this is not the case. Poverty can happen to any child! The article goes into detail about the differences in poverty based on the child’s race and how they can be treated differently because of their skin color. I plan on focusing on this as well because this affects the child’s educational environment. Teachers, students, and even parents can discriminate against a child because of their social class and also their skin color which can affect that child’s education.

Source #3:
Cuthrell, Kristen. "Examining the Culture of Poverty; Promising Practices" Taylor & Francis Inc. 52.2:104-110. Web. January. 2010

As stated in source two teachers have the tendency of treating children in poverty different than other children. This source goes into detail about poverty in the school environment and gives an example of a 6 year old child that has a problem with discrimination because of being from a family in poverty. I plan on briefly describing this young boy’s story because many people will be affected by this. There is a section in this article that really got my attention and that is “Poverty’s affect on children in school.” I plan on using this part of the article a lot because it gives a lot of good information and also credible information. For example, the No child left behind act I think is very important and I will be using this a lot in my paper.

***Source #4:
"The State of America's Children® 2014 Report." The State of America's Children® 2014 Report. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Mar. 2015.

This source goes along with my third source. As stated above there is an act that prohibits schools from discriminating children in poverty which is the No child left behind act. This source is actually one of my favorites because it goes into detail about this act and also has many others as well.  This source touches on every aspect of children in poverty such as family, school, different races, global, etc. I plan on using this source a lot in my article because this was published in 2014 so this source is up to date and it also has lots of information. One piece of information I plan on using is the amount of children in poverty separated into different groups which will support my second source as well.
Source #5:

Ingraham, Christopher. "Child Poverty in the U.S. Is among the Worst in the Developed World." Washington Post. The Washington Post, n.d. Web. 30 Mar. 2015.

The importance of this source is to show all the countries and how many children in poverty they have. This also breaks down the US by state and shows what state has the most child poverty. The part that has really stuck with me is in the United States it says 1 in 3 children live in poverty. I plan on using this source to go along with and support all of my other sources because this one ties all of my sources together.

Good:

Dr, Walts,

Due to an incident at home I will be unable to attend class. I will get all assignments missed and notes taken from another student in class. If possible, can we meet up when I return to discuss what I missed in class? I am so sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Changing My Major Good/Bad

When thinking about doing something well I am very good when it comes to marketing and convincing people to do things my way. When I first picked a major I decided it was going to be in marketing because that it what I am good at. Everyone around me though begged to differ. They always told me that the job opportunities are slim to none and that I would have to start out as a sales person and work my way up. After some time, I started doubting my choice of marketing and changed my major to accounting/business administration. I never really let anyone's opinions get in my way but this time I did. I do not regret the decision I have made about changing my major but I know I am not doing what I really like to do. I know my decision is what's best for my career but thinking about being in a cubical really does not seem like what I want to do. To solve this problem I have decided I am going to be an entrepreneur. Having an accounting major will really help with running my business and since I am good at marketing I can take what I already know and apply it to my own business. I will get the best of both worlds.
